Well, the 1998 April Hummer Challenge is history. Great weekend, for everyone (OK, not
so great for those who didn't survive!) First place winner in 1997, Bill Myer, broke in
the first event on Friday (arrggg!), and a number of other trucks broke in the ensuing
day's events! However, drivers who were careful about how they drove, and planned to
survive the rigors of the Hummer Challenge did make it through to Sunday!
1st place went to Rick Rasmussen
and his co-pilot. Rick did an incredible job, but later admitted that they had practiced
for months!
2nd place went to a team from Reeves Hummer in Tampa! A couple of fellows from their Land
Rover team came over to drive the entry. Despite loss of power steering and brakes for two
of the three days, these guys showed us all a few things, including just how much of an
angle a Hummer can do
without turning over! <g> Sorry, guys, but I don't have a photo of your truck.
3rd place went to the team of Mark
Sanders and Peter Hipson <g>. Mark and I went to have fun and not to destroy Mark's
(rather nice) Hummer. Where am I in this photo? Well someone had to work the camera!
Mark's driving was first rate, I hope to navigate him again, next time to first place.
Last year's defending champ, Bill
Myer, had the really bad luck to break on the first event! He was the first one to start,
(we started second), and about ten miles in, just beyond a large mud puddle, we found
Bill. He hit the water just a bit too fast, and that was all she wrote. I'm sure Bill will
be back (with a vengeance!) for next year's Challenge. The photo shows Bill fixing the
first place truck just before the final event on Sunday. You think he looks dirty here,
you should have seen him when he was done!
Hummers will get more famous now:
the entire Challenge was taped by Fox TV for a planned special which may air later this
summer! When it makes it on the air, this may be the best Hummer viewing that you'll see
without getting dirty. Now, can you figure out who this is, and why he's got a big smile?
Well, he just finished the last event, and his Hummer is still running just fine! Good
job!
Did I mention dirty? Well, I'm beginning to get some of the dirt off me!
Splish, splash, I was taking a
bath on a Sunday afternoon. Or at least they would right after finishing this mud bog run!
A nasty mud hole, about 75 ft long, and deep keep us on our toes. Some of the best shots
of trucks going through the water will be on the TV show, however. Me, I just didn't have
time to take as many pictures as I'd have liked to.
Let's give a big hand to all the 1998 Hummer Challenge Winners, first through last
place! Anyone who entered deserves it.
Now, without delay, plan to be at the next Hummer Challenge! Word has
it that we will do this again, perhaps in October! Be there...
