September 13 1997

This is a summary of the NEHOG (New England Hummer Owner's Group) off road trip on the 13th of September 1997. An easy ride (we had kids with us), with just enough challenge to keep us all happy. People who attended included:

Bob Smith -- From Connecticut, Bob drives a brown 95 four door hardtop. Bob's Hummer is a nice clean rig, just the right color so that it doesn't show trail dirt!

David Wilson -- David just recently got his Hummer, a metallic green four door hardtop. David, who owns a limo company has added a killer sound system to his hummer, but I think he's just getting started!

Peter Hipson -- Peter's white 95 wagon is ready for the trails. Equiped with every option known to AM General (except for a rear window defroster, bummer) peter hits the trails with his chail saw, chails, straps, and a host of tooks and toys!

Ham -- Ham (sorry I don't have his last name!) drives a clean little Geo Tracker. This is one hell of a vehicle, stock as far as I could see, Ham is one of the most awsome drivers on the trails. If I ever get a spare vehicle, it may well be a Tracker! What Ham could not bounce over, he just went around. The last big splash he hit at about 30 MPH, and barely slowed down at the end! The water was 12 to 18 inches deep (when he went through) and I am sure that there was water all the way to the tops of the trees!

Here's some photo's of the day's run:

NEW-3.jpg (97426 bytes) Just a little rock to climb over. Looks much smaller from this side, but it was about 30 inches tall on the average. The only practical way over is from the side. The right side had a narrow, curving path around it. The Tracker (which is about 4 ft wide) fit with the left wheels on the side of the rock. The Hummers had to crawl up the whole side...

NEW-4.jpg (38506 bytes) After getting started, it was easier done than said!

NEW-1.jpg (35297 bytes) The Tracker was able to go through where my right front wheel is off the ground. Me, a little articulation, and some BTM was all it took.

NEW-5.jpg (45041 bytes) David followed me but Bob took a different track. This is David hitting the same spot. David spun a bit then poped right out. However, Bob, seeing David and I do it decided to be different:

NEW-6.jpg (42697 bytes) Gee, Bob, I don't see rocker panel protection there! (the rock just cleared, by about one layer of (now missing) wax!

Ham kept telling us about water. Now this is unusual here in New Hampshire this time of year. Usually late summer is dry, however this year we've had tones of rain! The Tracker hit this puddle at about 30 (no kidding, he backed all the way to my front bumper and nailed it!) and was still going about 20 when he cleared it. My viewpoint was the best, looking right at his back. Water was shooting up about 25 ft in the air, clearing the trees, and chaising our camera lady way out into the woods!

NEW-2.jpg (23584 bytes) Not much of a shot, I cropped this one down a lot. Ann didn't want to get the camera wet! Throughout the day's ride, David did as much splashing as he could--his goal was to make his nice pretty green Hummer as muddy as possible. Once back to our house, it was rather brown!
